The hair of the waterbuck is very coarse and hollow on the inside. Despite the name “waterbuck”, waterbucks do not like to be in the water, but usually near rivers and lakes, because they are very dependent on water. They only go into the water when they are attacked by predators.

Historical habitat range only in the Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region)
- Waterbuck bulls wear horns, while a waterbuck cow does not have horns
- bulls are also larger and have a thick, strong neck
- the hairy reddish-brown coat becomes darker with age
- males are darker than females
the neck is broader, more massive and very dark - the horns on a particularly old bull are two-thirds whitish in color
- horn base is firm and pronounced
- very flat horn tips

- They are indigenous only to the rivers in the northeast of Namibia (Caprivi).
- Waterbucks live in 2 different social groups, which consist of so-called bachelor groups (exclusively males) or family groups of females, as well as their offspring and a territorial buck
- They have perfectly adapted to savannah areas, as well as shrub & grasslands
- Waterbucks are very water dependent and are therefore found near rivers, valleys and lakes
- The best time to hunt a waterbuck is at sunrise and sunset
- The best chance to stretch a mature bull is on a stalk or even a hide hunt
